CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION:
The changes to men and women’s roles seen over the past sixty years have lead to a challenging paradox. While some argue that the lack of women in boardrooms and Parliament is evidence of continued discrimination against women, others argue that it is men, particularly white men, who are discriminated against in a newly ‘feminised’ world.
· Should we be introducing gender quotas or does this disadvantage men and risk undermining the efforts of those who succeed?
· Should systems be put in to place to create absolute equality, for example in relation to pensions and paternity leave, or should we work under the assumption that men and women are equal but different?
· What are the implications of assuming that all men and all women face the same obstacles irrespective of age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, ability or education?
· Should we be concerned about the prevalence of sexual images of both men and women and the messages they convey?
This conference aims to bring together interested parties in order to discuss these issues and more, in order to help identify ways to turn this confusion into consensus.
